Roaming, before and during a trip

Roaming means your home subscription is a guest on another network. The host carries the radio. Your home operator sets what you pay, unless a pass you bought from them says otherwise. A blog cannot see that price.
Before
Ask the home operator
Open the account you already pay, or call the number on that bill. Ask whether data roaming is included, capped, or billed per megabyte in Morocco. Save the answer. A forum price from last year is not your contract.

Look at the toggles
Data roaming and voice are separate switches on many phones. Airplane mode with Wi-Fi on is a way to use apps without mobile roaming. You will not receive ordinary cellular calls in that mode.

Choose one pipe
Either roam on purpose, within a limit you understand, or use a local prepaid SIM for data. Using both without looking is how two balances move at once. See SIM notes.
After
Turn the guest mode off
When you are home, data roaming can stay off until the next trip. Check one app that used to verify codes, in case it is still attached to the Moroccan number.
The name on the screen may not be your biller
A visitor’s phone in Morocco often registers on Maroc Telecom, Orange Morocco, or inwi, depending on agreements. The bill still comes from the company that issued the home SIM, at the roaming rate in that contract. The host network is the carrier the phone joined. This publication is not a party to the charge.
A local SIM changes the number
If you buy a Moroccan prepaid SIM, people must reach you on the new number in +212 form. Your home number will not ring unless that SIM is still in the phone and registered, or calls are forwarded — forwarding itself can be a paid feature and can fail quietly. Tell people which number is live. Dual-SIM phones can keep the home number for calls and put data on the local SIM. Set the data SIM explicitly. “Automatic” sometimes prefers the roaming line because it looks stronger.
Airplane mode is a tool, not a mood
Airplane mode turns the cellular radio off. You can then enable Wi-Fi alone. App messages go out over Wi-Fi. Cellular calls and SMS do not, until you leave airplane mode. This is a practical way to avoid roaming data if the accommodation has Wi-Fi you are willing to use. It is a poor setup if someone may need to reach you by ordinary phone for something urgent. Decide that before you land, and share the fallback. Staying in touch is about that message.
What we will not estimate for you
We will not quote a roaming rate, a “fair use” cap, or a partner list. Those are contract terms. Screenshot the page in your home operator’s account on the day you travel. If a charge later looks wrong, that screenshot is the document to show them. Sending it to maroc-telecom does not create a dispute with the operator.
Coverage still depends on place. A roaming phone can show full bars and then slow down, for the same capacity reasons as a local phone. Read signal if the registration looks fine and the call does not.
Arriving in Morocco
Your home SIM is the guest
Before the flight, open the account you already pay and save a screenshot of what Morocco costs on that plan: included, capped, or billed per unit. At landing, decide once. Roam on purpose inside that limit, or keep the home SIM for calls only and put data on a local prepaid SIM. Using both without looking moves two balances.
Airplane mode, then Wi-Fi only, stops mobile roaming and also stops ordinary cellular calls. Tell people that choice before you disappear into a hotel network. If someone may need the home number for something urgent, leave the cellular radio on and turn data roaming off, then test that an app is not still using mobile data through a second switch.
The name on the screen may be IAM, Orange Morocco, or inwi. The charge still belongs to the company that issued the home SIM, at their roaming rate. This publication is not in that contract.
Leaving Morocco
A Moroccan SIM becomes the guest
The same mechanism runs in reverse when a Moroccan prepaid or postpaid line travels. The foreign host carries the radio. The Moroccan operator sets the price, unless a pass bought from them says otherwise. Ask them before you go. A shop window price from a previous year is not your line.
People who learned your +212 number will keep dialling it. If you switch the Moroccan SIM off, tell them which number is live. Call forwarding back to another phone can be a paid feature and can fail without a warning tone. Test it with one call while you are still somewhere you can fix it, and do not treat it as a promise.
When you are home again, turn data roaming off until the next trip. Open one app that used to send verification texts, in case it is still attached to the number you are no longer watching.
A forum price is a story about someone else’s contract.
The only roaming figure that belongs in your pocket is the one your own operator showed you, dated, for this SIM. If a later charge looks wrong, that screenshot is what you show them.
